2025 Rankings

UW–Madison is included in the U.S. News & World Report list of schools with stellar examples of study abroad programs.

The following rankings are from the 2025 Open Doors® Data Report, which includes all UW–Madison U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident degree-seeking student credit-bearing activity outside of the U.S. for academic year 2023-24 (fall 2023 through summer of 2024).

UW–Madison is ranked 6th among all U.S. universities and colleges for total students studying abroad.

The total number of UW–Madison students who studied abroad as reported in the 2025 Open Doors Data Report:  3,091. This year marks the first time that participation has risen above 3,000.

Year-long program participation:

  • 1st among Big 10 Academic Alliance Institutions
  • 11th among all U.S. Institutions

Semester-long program participation:

  • 2nd among U.S. public and Big 10 Academic Alliance Institutions
  • 3rd among all U.S. Institutions

63% of UW–Madison study abroad students participated on semester and year-long programs, 28 points above the national average.

The average study abroad participation rate for the entire graduating class of 2024-25 was 27%.
