2025 Rankings

UW–Madison is included in the U.S. News & World Report list of schools with stellar examples of study abroad programs.

The following rankings are from the 2025 Open Doors® Data Report, which includes all UW–Madison U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident degree-seeking student credit-bearing activity outside of the U.S. for academic year 2023-24 (fall 2023 through summer of 2024).

UW–Madison is ranked 6^th among all U.S. universities and colleges for total students studying abroad.

The total number of UW–Madison students who studied abroad as reported in the 2025 Open Doors Data Report:  3,091. This year marks the first time that participation has risen above 3,000.

Year-long program participation:

• 1^st among Big 10 Academic Alliance Institutions
• 11^th among all U.S. Institutions

Semester-long program participation:

• 2^nd among U.S. public and Big 10 Academic Alliance Institutions
• 3^rd among all U.S. Institutions

63% of UW–Madison study abroad students participated on semester and year-long programs, 28 points above the national average.
