UW-Madison is on a semester system. Our academic year begins with the fall semester. The academic calendar is set several years in advance.
There will be a mandatory exchange student orientation at the beginning of each semester. Orientation is held a few days before the first day of class. You are required to be present from orientation until your last examination is complete.
Fall Semester: (beginning of) September – (late) December
Spring Semester: (late) January – (mid) May
Exchange students may attend UW-Madison for a single semester, academic year (September – May), or calendar year (January – December).

My home university’s semester overlaps with orientation/the start of the semester at UW-Madison. Is it okay to miss orientation/the first week of class?
No. You will be given a lot of important information at orientation. It’s also the only time that we will have everyone together as a group at the beginning of the semester, so your attendance is important. If your university’s semester prevents you from arriving on time, you will need to join us on exchange during a different semester.
When can I enter the United States?
You can enter the United States up to 30 days prior to the start date on your DS-2019 form. See our section on Visa for more information on the DS-2019.
How long am I allowed to stay in the United States after the end of my exchange?
You are required to leave the United States no later than 30 days after the end date on your DS-2019 form. See our section on Visa for more information on the DS-2019.
Orientation
Together, your online and on-site orientation will set you up for success at UW-Madison. We recommend that you watch our online orientation video modules a few weeks prior to your arrival on campus.
