Study abroad offices at UW-Madison require academic department/unit support for any newly proposed program. Such support constitutes a department’s or unit’s commitment to the program, both in terms of academic opportunities for students available through program courses and the corresponding course equivalents provided by the UW-Madison supporting department/unit as well assisting with active, ongoing promotion of the program to students within the major/certificate of the supporting department/unit.

Departmental engagement with sponsored programs
The way a department engages with the programs it sponsors may vary. There are a number of opportunities for collaboration that include but are not limited to:
- Promoting opportunities in targeted classes
- Approve and/or pre-approve course equivalents cross-listing program courses
- Develop a study abroad Major Advising Page (MAP)
- Offer scholarships
- Coordinate marketing efforts and share marketing materials
- Cover salary or share costs of program leader salary
- Participate in program evaluation and assessment
- Share details of program with colleagues
- Support professional development of faculty and staff (e.g. site visits, onboard new program leaders through shadowing, trainings, etc.)
