International Academic Programs (IAP), the central study abroad office on campus, collaborates with academic units across campus to develop safe, accessible, and high-quality study abroad, domestic study away, and international internship opportunities that foster students’ academic, personal, and professional growth. IAP serves as the main study abroad office for the following schools & colleges:
- College of Letters and Science
- College of Engineering
- School of Education
- School of Human Ecology
- School of Medicine and Public Health
IAP works in close partnership with study abroad offices within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and the Wisconsin School of Business to develop programs.
All approved UW-Madison programs share policies, procedures, and best practices.

The first step for exploring a new student opportunity is meeting with us. These meetings provide an opportunity for you to explain your idea and for us to provide initial feedback. We will also review the steps for developing a new opportunity, review relevant policies, and the services we provide.

UW Signature Program
Programs specifically created by UW to complement on-campus academics, which may include courses taught by UW instructors.
Exchange/Direct Enroll Program
Programs offered through direct partnership with foreign institutions, which may include reciprocal arrangements for foreign partner institution students to study at UW, and typically offers a full range of partner university courses for UW students.
Affiliate Program
Programs offered by universities or study abroad organizations created specifically for foreign students that may include a specialized curriculum and co-curricular and extra-curricular cultural activities.
Worldwide Program
Programs specifically created by UW that provide structure and support to students on experiences where the program location varies for each student and term.
Internships
UW Signature Internships are professional opportunities for students abroad that are developed through faculty, alumni, UW connections and Wisconsin businesses. Students earn credit while doing their internship.
